Standard 1 Teachers know the subjects they are teaching. The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines she or he teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils. Evidence1: Museo del Prado Virtual Field Trip. Students will view artwork in Madrid’s famed Prado Museum.http://www.museodelprado.es/ Rationale 1: This lesson was created for a Spanish 5 class during a unit on Spanish Artists. Students will be going on a virtual field trip to the Prado Museum in Madrid. They will be in the computer lab for one day looking at artwork by Spanish artists and describing the pieces. This lesson was taught during the unit on Spanish Artists. The lesson gave the students an opportunity to see the artwork that they learned about and to visit an art museum. It also required them to use the vocabulary for the unit to describe the artwork. The students seemed to enjoy being connected to the art world and being able to explore the museum on their own. This was used at the beginning of the year and it was beneficial for me to observe the students navigating a website entirely in Spanish. One of the benefits for using virtual field trips is that it allows the students to connect to people and places throughout the world. KSD: 1.K.3 The teacher relates his/her disciplinary knowledge to other subject areas. Through the Spanish language, students learn about artwork. Visiting the museum can prepare them for traveling in the future. 1.S.1 The teacher effectively uses multiple representations and explanations of disciplinary concepts that capture key ideas and links them to students’ prior understanding. Students viewed artwork that was shown in their textbook, that was shown on PowerPoint slides in class and then that they searched for in the Virtual Museum. Students began to recognize the works of artists and felt a sense of accomplishment after identifying certain works or artists. The descriptions of artwork they wrote used vocabulary that was learned at the beginning of the unit, which reinforced their knowledge of the language. 1.D.3 The teacher has enthusiasm for the discipline(s) s/he teaches and sees connections to everyday life. I showed the students pictures from my own visit to the Prado and talked about the museum. Every visit to Madrid should include a trip to the Prado. Most students enjoyed visiting the museum and hopefully will have a chance to travel in the future.
